Burren Chernobyl Project
Burren Chernobyl Project (BCP) is an Irish NGO helping the children and communities of Belarus that fell victim to the effects of the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster. Since 1993 we have carried out many projects to assist them in the medical, social, and economic problems they face. From bringing children to Ireland for respite and a chance to live in a loving family home to sending trucks of humanitarian aid annually, and teams of volunteers, builders and medical groups travelling to Belarus to work in orphanages, adult asylums and communities.
At present our biggest programme is our volunteer programme where we have people travelling from all over Ireland to spend time with the children and young adults with disabilities in Cherven and Gorodishche Orphanages. These groups provide the children with love and attention that they so desperately crave. They provide stimulation and bring boundless energy and love with them to break up the mundane daily routine of life in an institution. Our volunteers work with bedbound children doing massages, taking them outside and using simple sensory play activities. We also conduct activities for the older, more mobile children and young adults. These activities encourage their creative, musical and sporting abilities; developing more confidence and a stronger self-belief we provide a supportive environment for these qualities to blossom.
The love between our children and our volunteers is a love like no other. It is unconditional, this can easily be seen through our large community of long term volunteers who return to Belarus annually if not multiple times a year. The welcome they receive from the children is more than just excitement about maybe some sweeties, it’s the knowledge that their family have come to visit, to hold a hand, to hug, to smile, to love.
This project was born of this unconditional love and produced by our dedicated volunteers, please take a minute to read the story behind the chosen song and gain a little insight into our bond with these children and our passion to better their lives.

The Wonder Of You
The Wonder Of You, a song written in the late 50's, became a big hit for Elvis Presley in 1970. Somewhat forgotten since, the song got a new lease of life when it was recorded by the Irish band Villagers and appeared in the Big Little Lies (featuring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman).
The song was adopted by one of the BCP volunteer groups that visited Gorodishche in July 2017. When the song is listened to carefully, it tells a beautiful story of the relationship between the children of the orphanages and the volunteers of the Burren Chernobyl Project. A plan was born, in Summer 2017, to record the song and bring it to #ChristmasNo1.
The first verse of the song (sung by children from St. Conaire's and St. Tola's school choirs) tells us how the children of the orphanage feel misunderstood ("when no one else can understand me") but loved and consoled by the BCP teams ("you bring me hope and consolation"). The love of the children towards the volunteers is returned in the second verse (sung by BCP volunteers) where we hear them speak to the children about how their smile and touch brings joy ("and when you smile the world seems brighter, you touch my hand and I'm a King"). The chorus, sung by all, speaks simply of "The Wonder Of You". Voices of young children from Shannon introduce the CD as they speak on behalf of our children of Belarus, resigned to be where they are but so looking forward to the love of the volunteers ("I know no other way of life - or living . . . I ask if I can be with you . . . ").
More than 170 volunteers (children, adults, musicians, artists) have been involved in bringing the project to life.
The children of Belarus thank you for becoming part of #ChristmasNo1 and welcome you to becoming part of The Wonder Of You.
